The Bitcoin symbol ₿ is officially encoded in Unicode 10.0 at position U+20BF on June 21, 2017. Bitcoin joins the ranks of $, €, £, and ¥ as a currency with its own Unicode character. The proposal was championed by Ken Shirriff and others starting in 2015. Having ₿ in Unicode meant every computer, phone, and operating system in the world could natively render the Bitcoin currency symbol -- a small but significant step toward Bitcoin being treated as a legitimate global currency rather than a niche internet experiment.
