The ProShares Bitcoin Strategy ETF (BITO) launches on the New York Stock Exchange, becoming the first US Bitcoin-linked ETF. It trades over $1 billion in volume on its first day, making it one of the most successful ETF debuts in history. While based on futures rather than spot Bitcoin, BITO opens the door for traditional investors to gain Bitcoin exposure through their brokerage accounts. The spot ETF would follow three years later.
