Lightning Pay Day

2018-01-08Protocol & Technical

On this day in 2018, the first known real-world purchase over the Lightning Network was completed when a user paid for a TorGuard VPN subscription. The payment was made using an early Lightning implementation on Bitcoin mainnet, months before the official beta releases. Just as Laszlo's pizza purchase proved Bitcoin could work as money in 2010, this transaction proved that instant, near-zero-fee Bitcoin payments over Layer 2 were not just theoretical -- they were real and working.
