Bitstamp, one of the oldest and largest Bitcoin exchanges, is hacked for approximately 19,000 BTC (~$5 million at the time) through a social engineering attack targeting an employee. The exchange suspended operations for several days before resuming with improved security. Unlike Mt. Gox, Bitstamp survived the breach and continued operating. Yet another reminder of the risks of custodial solutions and the importance of self-custody: not your keys, not your coins.
